A new kind of phone bill: Ohio’s distracted driving law takes full effect

by Brendan Clementz

The law created six months ago for drivers in Ohio is finally coming into full effect. Now, if you’re checking your phone in the middle of driving, you can get fined up to $1,000.

The reason that this law was created was to combat distracted driving on Ohio roadways. It does this by giving fines and penalties to the driver’s licenses of people who use their phones and other similar electronic devices while driving. With three or more offenses in less than two years, you may even get your license suspended for ninety days.

“I think it’s very important,” School Resource Officer Black said. “A lot of accidents have happened before because people have been distracted by cell phones.”

The original version of the law was passed half a year ago. Until now, it was in a grace period so that people could get to know and become accustomed to the law. Now that the law’s out in its entirety, drivers will have to keep their attention on the road–or pay the price.
