Student of the Month is a tradition Bellbrook High School started in 2018. It recognizes students’ excellence, effort, and hard work inside and outside the classroom. For the past five years, two students a month have been selected as honorable students.
“The process is simple. Each grade is assigned months,” principal David Hann said. “Teachers can nominate up to two students for Student of the Month from that grade and list their reasons for the nomination.”
October featured two juniors, Alexis Holding and Lainey Schleich.
“I was very honored to be awarded student of the month,” junior Lainey Schleich said. “I greatly appreciate the teachers for choosing me. Their very kind and heartfelt description made me feel very ecstatic and proud.”
“When I was told I was chosen, I felt very proud of myself,” junior Alexis Holding said. “I’m not the type of person to do good and flaunt it, so for me to just be trying my best and doing my own thing, and then to get recognized for it, I felt very accomplished.”
“When I nominate a student for student of the month, I try to choose a student who makes BHS a better place to be,” English teacher Julie Giles said. “Whether it’s how they treat others, how they carry themselves in the classroom, or even how they act in the halls.”
Student of the Month gives every single grade level and student the same opportunity. Seniors have the opportunity in September, January, and May. Juniors in October and February. Sophomores in November and March. Freshmen in December and April.
With Student of the Month only selecting two students a month, it is a considerable award.
“Students should feel honored when they earn student of the month,” English teacher Paige Lewis said. “I can only speak for myself, but a lot of time and thought goes into choosing a student of the month nominee”
“It speaks to the work ethic I am witnessing from a student, as well as the way the student treats others in the learning environment. Teachers do not discuss who they plan to nominate, so it is likely that out of an entire graduating class, a student has been mentioned by multiple teachers in order to earn the award.”
