Bellbrook High School teachers cosplay Thanksgiving dinner

Gobble Gobble! Those were the only sounds surrounding the halls Friday, November 17.

One lucky teacher parades around school all day wearing the infamous teacher turkey costume. This year the nominees were Mr. Carreira, Mr. Lambright, Mr. Reinhart, and Ms.Tomlin. Mr. Lambright won the competition but Mr. Carreira was a good sport and wore the Pilgrim outfit.

Students began donating money on Tuesday, November 14. All donations went to Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund who partners with veterinarians in the Miami Valley area to help them offset the cost of providing reduced, low-cost or no-cost services to their clients who might otherwise have to surrender or euthanize their pets. Students raised $477.84.

The event is organized by the freshman class student government officers and this year’s recipient was selected by Mrs. Tompkins who received help from Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund during her dog’s medical crisis.

While Teacher Turkey is a yearly tradition, there are some teachers who appear to dread turning into dinner. “I will grudgingly wear the costume,” Mr. Carreira said.

On the other hand, some teachers were ecstatic when they figured out they had a chance at this tasty opportunity. “I was thrilled. I have been nominated several times and never won,” Ms.Tomlin said.

On the school flier posted all throughout the halls there was a sentence by each nominee representing their stance. “Lambright’s plan is to recruit all the staff and all the students to donate to make sure Reinhart is the turkey,” the flier said. “At first Mr. Reinhart thought Tomlin deserved to be the turkey, but after hearing Lambright’s game plan, he had other thoughts.”

An innovation to Teacher Turkey this year was to include online donations via the school’s sports ticketing site, HomeTown Ticketing. Many students do not carry cash to school, so this option allowed for more donations.
