Bellbrook students uninterested in World Series

While the World Series just finished with a surprising winner, most Bellbrook students don’t seem interested in the 120-year-old postseason championship.

The World Series is between the winning teams of the American League and the National League. The first team to win four out of seven games is the winner. The Rangers were named the champions this year, garnering some attention from baseball fans.

This is a second World Series win for the Rangers as they have gotten very close multiple times without succeeding. They were the lowest-seeded team to win the series, starting at number nine. “I thought it was cool that the Rangers won because they hadn’t won it for 60+ years,” senior Johnny Deszcz said.

Additionally, the MLB introduced some new rules to make the game go faster and more interesting to watch. One of the major changes was the addition of a pitch clock.

“I think the new rules are better to get more people to watch baseball games that used to not find watching baseball fun,” Deszcz said. “The games go quicker and it adds more strategy to the game. For example, when to pick off or throw over.”

However despite these changes to make the game more exciting to watch, and the Rangers making World Series history, there is a surprisingly low amount of people that watch the World Series. Just this year, MLB’s TV ratings have dropped 23%. This year’s championship is the least-watched World Series in its history.

In a poll of Bellbrook students, 87.5% said they did not watch the World Series, and out of the 80 responses, only 10 said they followed.

While some students were aware of the World Series, most are not viewers and do not follow baseball in general.

“I don’t follow baseball at all unless it’s for a dance event, where we are dancing on the field,” sophomore Madison Russell said. “Other than that, baseball is not my jam!”
