SCAD is a private art college founded in 1978 by Paula Wallace.

Savannah College of Art and Design, commonly known as SCAD, sent a representative all the way from Georgia to talk about creative careers and opportunities with Bellbrook High School students.

Jenny Conarroe, assistant director of admissions, presented to Mrs. Newsome’s third-period Art 3 and 4 class to talk about the college and its many programs.

“So at SCAD, we focus on creative careers, so that can be things you might traditionally think of, like photography and painting and sculpting,” Conarroe said. “We have programs like architecture, industrial design, interactive game design, and those are our STEM-related programs. So we really do have a wide variety of programs to focus on and an extensive umbrella of many careers.”

Conarroe spoke about the educational opportunities SCAD offers through undergraduate programs as well as a high employment rate after graduation.

Students received a handout during the presentation that included SCAD’s degree programs and other information.

“I think that they have a really high success rate with their graduates. And their employment rate after graduation: it’s pretty good,” Newsome said. “They have a lot of connections with all kinds of really neat places.”

“We want you to be employed in the field that you come and spend your time and money at SCAD to learn how to do,” Conarroe said. “So for that reason, we always update things as needed to make sure that you’re prepared for the workforce after you graduate.”

SCAD collaborates with companies to offer internships to their students while at the college. In addition, Conarroe talked about their Atlanta campus offering film students the chance to work with entertainment businesses.

“It has a lot of opportunities as well as a lot of great places to do internships. Cartoon Network is there, Tyler Perry’s Studio,” Conarroe said. “Atlanta is a great place for film and television students. Marvel movies are filmed there, so all kinds of things are happening in Atlanta.”

In addition to SCAD’s Atlanta campus, they have campuses in both Lacoste, France, and Savannah, Georgia, its founding location in 1978.

“Savannah has the larger campus. It’s in a smaller city; it’s about 15 miles from the beach,” Conarroe said. “It’s smaller, very creative, lots of things happening there as well. About 75% of our on-campus students live in Savannah.”

At SCAD’s European campus in Lacoste, France, students can study abroad for 10 weeks. “When you’re accepted to SCAD, you’re accepted to all locations,” Conarroe said.
