As Bellbrook Swim Team begins their season, they introduce a new assistant coach, former Bellbrook student and swim team captain Kathleen Magill. Magill, graduate of the Class of 2011, was the girls’ captain both her junior and senior year. She also swam for three years at Knox College in Illinois.
Magill hasn’t had much time to make an impression yet but has big ambitions for the year. “My hope for this season is to see every swimmer push themselves, work hard at practice, drop time, and most of all, be supportive and encouraging teammates to each other,” Magill said.
Magill is already making her mark on the team, showing who she is as a coach. “Her coaching style is more hands-on, pointing out flaws. It’s a different coaching style,” junior Claire Cutting said. “Personally, it pushes me to go harder in a way I think it has improved my swimming.”
“I’d definitely say it’s more of an active style, saying anything that can be improved,” senior Rylan Carper said. “She’s very participatory in the practices, making sure everyone is swimming their best and improving in every way.”
This year, the swim team has doubled in size but the dynamic on the team is still very close. “It feels like one big family, which is cool because it’s almost 50 people. And even though the coaches are different this year they still feel like family to me,” Cutting said.
“I’m amazed at how the team has grown since I was on it, both in terms of size and team culture,” Magill said.
