World Population Review tracks missing persons

According to statistics of the missing person cases in the United States, between the years 1990-2022 there are about 546,568 people who have gone missing. Today there are even more people who have gone missing, and some cases have just gone cold.

“Missing persons are people whose current whereabouts and health status are unknown, at least to the general public and their loved ones, and whose disappearance has been reported to law enforcement authorities,” according to World Population Review.

People could be reported for many reasons like kidnapping, forced disappearance, missing in action, voluntary disappearance, or an involuntary disappearance.

There are about 2,300 children that are reported missing in the U.S. daily.

Each state in the U.S. has a different definition for kidnapping which makes it hard for them to work together to discover the location of a missing person. “This complexity creates a logistical challenge even when the data exists, but many of these data points may not be readily collected by a given country,” according to World Population Review.

“California tops the list with 2,133 missing persons reported, followed by Florida with 1,252 and Texas with 1,246,” according to the Wise Voter website.
