This Summer Olympic games are being held in Paris from July 26-Aug 11. Over the 29 Summer Olympics that have been held, the sports have constantly changed. Millions of eyes will be turned to sports many have not heard of, but a majority of high school students will only watch sports they partake in themselves.
Bellbrook High School Sophomore, Symone Costner, a girl’s basketball team member, thinks the inclusion of basketball encourages viewing of basketball beyond the Olympics.
“Watching these high-level players encourages people to explore beyond the Olympics,” Costner said. “People then go support college or even high school basketball.”
But the games are also home to sports not always found in school. Equestrian show jumping has been a part of the Olympics since 1900. An equestrian, sophomore Sara Knee finds show jumping brings an interesting layer to the Olympics.
“Being an equestrian, I understand the challenge of working with another animal,” Knee said. “But seeing the riders on the Olympics shows the public an interesting contrast between your typical sport.”
