Beetlejuice, a horror comedy released in March of 1988, has an upcoming sequel Friday, September 6.
Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, playing alongside each other in the 1988 film, are returning to their respective roles as Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz, and Delia Deetz. “The original Beetlejuice has always been a classic,” junior Natalie Recher said.
Although the original film could be considered a horror comedy, it could be argued that Beetlejuice was a musical comedy. “My favorite part of the [original] movie is the songs,” freshman Hannah Anderson said. “It’s always been a fun movie.”
With it being such a large gap since the initial release, it is only expected that people would be eager to see it on the big screens. “I’m excited, and I’ve missed seeing Beetlejuice,” Recher said. “Eventually, I plan on watching it.”
“I am glad they are remaking it,” Anderson said. “I’ve been excited to watch it.”
Those who have been eagerly awaiting the sequel for nearly 36 years have finally received it. When films are remade, one issue is often considered: the possibility of it not meeting people’s expectations. “Hopefully it’s better, and not like one of those movies that they make worse once it is remade,” Anderson said.
The filming of the sequel was originally planned to begin in the middle of 2022, but was postponed due to the dual strikes in Hollywood. Production were required to begin with the shooting of the smaller scenes in July of 2023 as a result, with the main filming resuming on May 10, 2023.
A majority of Beetlejuice was filmed in East Corinth, Vermont. During the last few days of the movie’s main film and production, it was photographed in Melrose, Massachusetts.
The first film, however, was filmed from March 11 – June 11 in 1987. Not only was the Beetlejuice sequel filmed in East Corinth, Vermont, but a portion of Beetlejuice 1 was also filmed in East Corinth. The main interior filming for the first film was shot at The Culver Studios in Culver City, California.
