“It Ends with Us” fans compare film to book

It Ends with Us, written by Colleen Hoover, was turned into a movie that was released Aug 9. The movie starred Blake Lively who played main character Lily Bloom and Justin Baldoni who played Ryle Kincaid.

The book is a romance based novel about Lily and Ryle falling in love and Lily finds out she is pregnant with Ryle’s child. She has to figure out what she wants to do while also being in an abusive relationship with Ryle, and if she should stay or not. All this while there is another guy she is connecting with.

There are many different perspectives going into the reviews about the movie versus the book. Senior Summer Bixler only read the book. “I saw all the TikToks and social media about the movie and I was just like: it’s not worth watching,” Bixler said.

Like many others, Bixler thinks the books are usually better than the movies. “There is a lot more description, and I can picture the books pretty well,” Bixler said. “The movies are just never as accurate and they always miss or skip parts that were in the book.”

According to readers and viewers, the book had more details and emotion added to it than the movie did, and the movie didn’t do well portraying the book’s story. Senior Addison Geloff was so excited to see the movie but was disappointed. “I read the book and watched the movie,” Geloff said. “I wasn’t a fan of how different they were. The movie left out a lot of the storyline in my opinion and did not fully cover the topic.”

There were some people who didn’t read the book and just watched the movie like senior Catey Caldwell. Caldwell went to see the movie, but she says she wants to read the book now. “I liked the characters and I have heard that the book has more details that the movie missed,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said that she would see it again but rated the movie 6 out of 10 overall. “I think that those who read the book were disappointed in how much the movie left out,” Caldwell said. “As someone who has only seen the movie, I liked it because I have nothing to compare it to until I read the book.”
