Current Vice President Kamala Harris, the new presidential nominee for the Democrats, had an interview with CNN along with vice presidential pick Tim Walz where she discussed her positions on multiple hot button issues.
In the interview, Harris was asked questions on her stances on topics such as fracking and illegal immigration, and reinforced her opinions on them. On the topic of fracking, Harris said, “As president, I will not ban fracking.” This is a change of opinion from in the past, as she had at one point in 2019 said that she supported banning fracking.
When asked about whether illegal immigration should be decriminalized, Harris said, “I believe there should be consequence. I recognize the problem.”
Harris’ stance on immigration has shifted from her previous stance and many Democrats who support more access to immigration. At a nomination acceptance speech on August 23, Harris said, “Donald Trump believes a border deal would hurt his campaign, so he ordered his allies in Congress to kill the deal,” and promised, “As president, I will bring back the bipartisan border security bill that he killed, and I will sign it into law.”
Despite her changes in opinion on issues like fracking and immigration, her values, namely on issues such as the climate crisis, remain unchanged according to her. “We can grow and we can increase a thriving clean energy economy without banning fracking,” Harris said.
