Bellbrook High School’s Supportive Peers program, created by teacher Tess Rivero in 2021, has been promoting inclusivity throughout the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek community. The initiative pairs high school student Lead Peers with Peers, students in the district’s special education program, to create authentic relationships.
Each day, Lead Peers spend 45 minutes with their Peers, assisting them with schoolwork, socializing, and offering encouragement. For many, it’s not just a volunteer experience but a highlight of their day.
“I enjoy so much about Supportive Peers, and seeing my peer is truly the highlight of my day,” Lead Peer and senior Jordan Frantz said. “This organization betters two people at once, and teaches so many personal and life lessons.”
Beyond the day-to-day interactions, Supportive Peers hosts events engaging the whole community. Recently, the program organized a Trunk or Treat at Bellbrook Middle School.
“I get to see all the work that goes into making this program happen,” senior Landon Smith, one of the event coordinators, said. “And how much this program affects our community. The events are a great opportunity to meet new people from all different walks of life.”
“I loved the Trunk or Treat,” Lead Peer and senior Sara Lamos said. “There are so many different activities for the kids and it’s a very positive environment.”
For many members, the program is shaping their future career plans. “I want to be an educator, so this program has allowed me to get experience, which has been very helpful,” senior Evi Fromm, a three-year member of Supportive Peers, said.
“Supportive Peers gives everyone involved a new perspective about life, genuinely changes lives, and builds a better community in Bellbrook,” Smith said.
