Wrestling is just getting started at Bellbrook High School. Wrestling is a winter sport that goes from mid November to mid March.
This year’s wrestling team has a total of ten seniors: Ivan Biao, Dylan Blackburn, Mason Burns, Tommy Dickman, Chris Flyer, Kane Kennedy, Billy Pumpelly, Braden Weeks, and Brian Zhang. They also have four girls on the team this year: sophomores Camila Arduz Cuellar and Abby Fulton, junior Lena Underbakke, and senior Jada Weiss.
The coaches for wrestling this year are head coach Bobby Kosins and Mike Kosins and Ron Wiederholt, who coach both varsity and JV.
The first meet for wrestling will be December 7 at Dayton Christian.
“The team captains have not officially been chosen yet,” Bobby Kosins said. “But Braeden Weeks will for sure be a captain along with Ivan Baio.”
Girls wrestling is a pretty new thing at BHS. Lena Underbakke is a junior at BHS, and she has been wrestling for nine years. Underbakke is on the girls varsity team team this year but her freshman year she was on the varsity boys team. “I have really high expectations for this season.” Underbakke said, “I’ve been working hard to recover from my injuries last season. My goal is to go to state and at least place in the top 8.”
“With the numbers we have, I expect to do well this season. As long as we can keep everyone healthy and on track, we should be very competitive,” Bobby Kosins said. “I am excited for this year. The team seems to be enthusiastic and has done a lot of off-season training to improve. We have one of the biggest teams we have ever had.”
