On Wednesday, November 13, the Republicans took control, obtaining 218 seats in the House of Representatives which secured the majority, while Democrats secured 208 seats after Republicans flipped seven seats.
The upper chamber of the Senate has been shifted to a Republican majority after they flipped three Democratic senate seats. Which makes it 52 seats for the Republicans and 47 seats for Democrats in the Senate currently.
What does this mean in regards to Donald Trump becoming the next president? Due to this win for the Republican party, it will be likely to make it easier for Trump to carry out his agenda when he enters office and he will obtain more power, according to NBC News.
In Arizona and California, it was a House Republican victory which led to the Republicans winning a majority. The Republicans intend to carry out “Trump’s vision for the country” by extending tax breaks, seizing control of the federal government’s most powerful tools, reshaping the economy, deporting, and more according to ABC News.
With Trump and his allies in Congress, they will have the opportunity to push through policy initiatives through what is known as reconciliation which is a process that will allow the GOP to fast track the legislation process without Democratic party members’ input.
Trump has already selected two members of the Republicans majority to serve in his administration, Mike Waltz from Florida and Elise Stefanik from New York. The Republican incumbents include David Valadao (California) and Don Bacon (Nebraska). A Pennsylvania state Representative Ryan Mackenzie unseated Democrat Susan Wild.
After the Republicans flipped Senate seats in Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia, it will give them space to confirm the Cabinets posts or Supreme Courts justices but it’s not guaranteed.
