The Golden Globes have been around for a while, the first ever one held was in 1945 and it has been around ever since. This event recognizes television and film standouts. The award ceremony was hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser this year.
This year’s Golden Globe Awards drew 9.3 million viewers, a slight decline compared to 2024, according to Nielsen data reported in Reuters, possibly because it was up against Saturday night football. In 2024 the show got 10.1 million viewers representing a 7% increase from the 2023 show, which reached an average 9.4 million viewers.
Is football the only reason why the views are declining or is there another reason? Junior Gabe Woods shows a trend when he was asked if he watched the awards. “No, I didn’t,” Woods said. “I had stuff to do and didn’t really care about it. I do like watching the Grammys more because it’s about music and I’m more interested in that stuff.”
However, Woods did see clips on TikTok. “I thought the host was funny,” Woods said. “And I like seeing what they wear because I think it’s entertaining.”
The views on the Golden Globes were not the only thing that were disappointing this year. Many people were upset about the outcome of winners at the Golden Globes. “Wins felt considered and often surprising. If this were the Oscars, there’d be little to complain about,” Adam White, features editor for The Independent, said.
Senior Mary Post concurs. “I don’t agree with most of the winners,” Post said. “Half of them I didn’t even know existed.”
“The musical that won one of the awards I have never heard of,” Woods said. “I thought Wicked should’ve won. Wicked was robbed of awards.”
