How to beat senioritis

By Ashtyn Praeter.

Senioritis is the common phenomenon among high school seniors as they near the end of their high school academic career. It is a decline in motivation and effort which typically leads to procrastination and a drop in performance and attendance. However, beating senioritis is crucial. Finishing strong and setting a positive tone is very important for the young students in our school. How can senioritis be overcome? Here are some simple solutions:

Set clear goals

Having a list of clear and achievable goals will help maintain focus and motivate. This can be done by breaking down large tasks into smaller and more manageable steps. Set milestones for large projects and reward yourself for completing them.

“Setting goals helps you stay motivated and it helps you stay organized,” senior Dean Mcmaster said. “It is the most important part.”

Dean McMaster finds setting goals is motivating.

Maintain routines

Sticking to a schedule you create from the beginning of the year or one you create throughout the year can help. Consistency can help seniors stay on track and make it easy to add in all of the senior activities. This also helps to prevent last minute cramming sessions.

Stay organized

Another great way to get through senioritis is by staying organized. This can be done using planners, calendars, and digital tools. It keeps track of important dates. This will help reduce the amount of stress you may feel and prioritize your most important pieces of work. It will also help you have time to enjoy activities with peers without the stress of work.

Stay engaged

Find ways to stay interested. Involve yourself in classes and assignments, join in on group discussions, and join groups. Engage with your course material and make it more enjoyable. Another way to stay engaged is attend sporting events, join teams, or join clubs. This is an amazing way to give yourself a fun sense of community and make time go faster.

Seek support and help

Do not hesitate to ever reach out for help and support if you are struggling with classes, grades, or attendance. There are teachers, counselors, or peers that will provide support, including the Hope Squad, peer tutors available during study halls, and guided study halls.

Reward yourself

A very important part of staying engaged in school is celebrating your successes and accomplishments, no matter what. This can provide a sense of achievement and motivate you to keep going through the last couple months of school.

“If you have something in mind you want or have wanted for a while, it is kind of setting a goal for yourself,” senior Caitlyn Bowser said. “And if you get what you want, that it is a reward for yourself and you are motivated.”

Caitlin Bowser knows rewards can be motivating.

Keep the end goal in mind

It is so important to remind yourself of what you are trying to reach and the bigger picture. Whether it is graduating, completing classes, or searching for the next move after high school, you have to remind yourself why you are doing it and keep reminding yourself that there are certain steps that need to be taken to reach your end goal.
