Bellbrook Writing Club competes in regional writing tournament

On the first weekend of February, members of the Bellbrook High School’s Writing Club competed in the JustWrite Ohio regional writing tournament, hosted at Xenia High School. Of the four who participated, two qualified for the state level of the competition.

So what is the Writing Club here at Bellbrook like? And how does it improve students’ writing skills?

“It’s a very fun place,” freshman Mary Steadman said, one of the members who competed in the regional tournament. “A lot of writing things sound very strict, with prompts and guidelines, but with the Writing Club, they give you a prompt and tell you to bend it how you see it.”

“I’ve always enjoyed writing as a hobby,” senior Gabby McMaster said. “I found this club as a way to gain more experience, not just in writing but in skills that could contribute to it. Doing the writing competition has also helped me understand where I might lack, and where my strong suits are.”

“We typically do little lessons and previews of subjects and synonyms for words, ways to describe characters and build them,” Steadman said.

These exercises evidently help. “I don’t repeat the same details as much,” freshman Madison Frank said. “And I don’t give as many unnecessary details as before.”

The Writing Club doesn’t just write as a group, of course. Students also get time to write independently. “We’re given prompts that we can do, but we can also do whatever we want,” Steadman said.

“There’s time to talk with friends as you write, and there’s a lot of humor in the club,” Frank said.

The Bellbrook High School Writing Club meets on Tuesdays in the BHS library from 3:15 to 4:15 for any interested students looking to up their game with writing. “Even if you have just a tiny bit of passion for writing, you should give it a try,” McMaster said.
