With the basketball season gearing up, talks about a new NBA team are sparking curiosity among Bellbrook players. According to ESPN, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “The league was taking a fresh look at the idea of expanding after nearly two decades.”
The Charlotte Bobcats were the last team introduced to the NBA in October 2004, and many fans believe a new team is long overdue. Potential cities being considered for a new NBA team are Seattle and Las Vegas.
Bellbrook senior William Heitkamp played basketball for twelve years, starting when he was only 6 years old, and offered his own insights on where to have a new team. “Seattle. I like this over Las Vegas because Seattle has had a team in the past,” Heitkamp said.
Bellbrook senior teammate David Gregory agreed with Heitkamp, arguing that Seattle should also get the new NBA team. Due to the former Seattle Supersonics’ owners failing to secure a new arena deal in Seattle, the team relocated after the 2007–08 season. The Supersonics, who played from 1967 to 2008, packed up their things and became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
However, not every Bellbrook basketball player agrees that Seattle should get the next NBA team. Bellbrook senior Cameron Regan disagreed, saying he thinks Las Vegas would be better suited for an NBA franchise.
Whether it’s Seattle reclaiming its basketball legacy or Las Vegas trying to rise as an NBA destination, one thing is certain: more competition is coming to the NBA.
