Students experience being the children of local candidates

By Eilley Wannarka

Residents of the city of Bellbrook and the township of Sugarcreek will vote for their respective city councils and township trustees in the election, Tuesday, November 4.

Bellbrook junior Becca Cyphers is the child of candidate Katherine R. Cyphers and sophomore Ember Day is the daughter of candidate Douglas Day. Katherine Cyphers is running for city council, and Douglas Day is running for township trustee. Both students are involved with lacrosse. Ember is a part of cross country, while Becca is a member of the tennis team and participates in other after-school clubs.

Running for anything requires campaigning to educate and promote votes. The most common ways people campaign for their race are to make signs, posters, and flyers. In their homes, these children of candidates have learned to be flexible as their parents are involved in campaigns.

“She’s usually out doing election stuff, so it’s usually just me and my sister at home, because my dad also works, so it’s just us,” Becca Cyphers said.

Ember Day is interested in politics and is following her dad’s footsteps, learning from him as the election season unfolds. “I’ve been helping him campaign, with like his Facebook page, and setting up a website,” Day said.

Our municipality of Bellbrook and Sugarcreek splits our community into two when election season comes around, making a lot of people unaware of who to vote for when they see campaign signs on the side of the road near their house.

Kathleen Wright, Katherine R. Cyphers, Forrest Greenwood, and Jenn Leclaire are in the race for the city council of Bellbrook. There are three positions available on the ballot, making it a competitive race. The city council’s job is to make policies, which include enacting ordinances, establishing the city’s budget, and setting local policies like taxes and rates of service.

Fred Cramer, Douglas Day, Marvis Moeller, and Jodi M. Puterbaugh are competing for the two seats as trustees in Sugarcreek Township. The township trustees’ job is to manage the assets, file taxes, and distribute assets as needed in Ohio.

The divide between Bellbrook and Sugarcreek can be confusing to some, so it’s essential to be informed about the candidates in the city or township where you live.
