How to create a perfect Friendsgiving

As the holiday season has begun, Thanksgiving is next on the list. In recent years, “Friendsgiving” has become a popular event among younger ages, where friends get together in a potluck style, with each person bringing their own dish to share.

When planning this event, it’s important to create the right atmosphere. Using decorations like candles, pumpkins, and fall decor can help to create the correct environment.

“I like to host Friendsgiving because I enjoy the atmosphere,” said senior Venus Aggarwal. “I like the gratitude and everyone dressing up.”

Music is another important aspect of the atmosphere. Selecting music that fits the calm, grateful mood helps to set tone. Songs like “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift, “About You” by The 1975, and “Juna” by Clairo demonstrate the type of music appropriate for this event.

Picking out an outfit is important for this holiday. Making sure that you are dressed appropriately, clothes such as jeans and sweaters help to create a more casual cozy tone.

The most important factor in Friendsgiving is the food. Creating the perfect food to share with your friends can help to show your appreciation for them. Typical food for this holiday would include turkey, pies, ham, mashed potatoes, and stuffing.

Stores such as Dorothy Lane Market and Whole Foods can provide adequate pre-made alternatives to cooking. Buying dishes from there, then adding sauces or toppings can help to add personal touches to pre-made food.

“I start buying ingredients a week in advance,” culinary teacher Nancy Pederson said. “I started preparing the day before.”

Friendsgiving gives friends the opportunity to get together and enjoy company, especially during a busy season for many. Thanksgiving is usually used to show gratitude towards family, but Friendsgiving allows you to share gratitude with friends.

“The best part of Friendsgiving is celebrating it with friends, taking pictures, and creating memories,” Aggarwal said. “No matter if I stay friends with them, I know I had fun, and it’s nice to see everyone bring food and see how everyone cooks.”
