Curling has been the sport to watch with the U.S.A team continuing to impress with the U.S.A women’s team exceeding expectations and heading to the medal rounds. The men’s team lost in the last game of the round robin. Mixed groups ended up getting a silver medal and having two outstanding athletes who may have been a big reason for the U.S.A.’s sparked interest.
The mixed group team consisting of Corey Thiesse and Korey Dropkin ended up winning a silver medal losing to Sweden 6-5 in the gold medal match. But both of them had spectators very interested. “My favorite curling fact is that our mixed doubles team both have the name Corey and Korey,” senior Jeremy Reigelsperger said.
After the two U.S.A. athletes brought people in, people started to realize how interesting as well as how hard the sport is. “It’s very interesting how intricate they toss the pucks,” senior Tyler Duffy said.
“I love the strategy,” Reigelsperger said. “It’s almost beyond me the lines they come up with and the trajectories they execute. It’s all extremely impressive.”
While the men’s team failed to make the playoffs, the women’s team finished fourth just outside of medals and tying their all-time best. “The performance of our mixed doubles curling team was amazing this year,” Reigelsperger said. “And as a fan of the Olympics, I know that’s not a normal thing for America.”
