Cartel boss assination leads to unrest across Mexico

Mexican armed forces assassinated Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the New Generation Cartel, on February 22. This marks a continuation of Mexico’s fight against drug cartels.

Days following the raid, cartel members launched attacks across multiple Mexican states. Videos online showed business and vehicles being burned, and airports on fire.

In response, the Mexican government has increased security measures. Soldiers were deployed in major areas of attack like Jalisco and Mexico City on February 24.

“We must remain informed and calm,” Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said according to CNN. “In the vast majority of the national territory, activities are proceeding with complete normality.”

Flights to Mexico have been cancelled, which has led to controversy online due to spring break trips happening in the next couple weeks. Popular destinations like Cancun have been seen as safer.

Precaution may still be necessary when traveling. “We are definitely still going but we are going to be cautious,” senior Emmie Sears said. “We are staying at a resort and hopefully staying away from dangerous areas.”

In June and July, the FIFA World Cup is being held across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Three cities in Mexico — Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey — will host various games of the event.

Safety concerns have been raised due to the violence spread throughout the country.

“We are working in coordination with local governments to ensure security,” President Sheinbaum said according to Bernama news. “There is no risk to visitors. Not the slightest risk.”
