Survivor celebrates its 25th year anniversary

For over two decades, the reality show “Survivor” has been a staple of American television. While many reality trends have come and gone, “Survivor” remains a powerhouse, maintaining a dedicated fan base, even within Bellbrook.

For many, the show isn’t just about the strategic blindsides or physical challenges. It’s about who is sitting on the couch next to them. BHS teacher Perry Caldwell and his family have integrated the show into their home life.

“On Wednesday nights, when the episodes come out, I always watch with my wife and youngest son, Carsen,” he said.

Caldwell uses the show as a chance to bring his family together during the busy school week. “I like to watch shows with them and just be in their presence,” he said.

The show’s ability to reinvent itself while honoring its past is what keeps students like BHS senior Cate Eberly coming back. Eberly, a long-time viewer, appreciates the evolution of the competition.

“I think it’s really fun how they bring back old players that are notoriously good to watch,” she said. “The seasons are always good, even though some are better than others.”

The current season, “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans,” is proving to be a great watch. Celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary, this season features a massive cast of 24 returning icons, ranging from older legends like Colby Donaldson and Jenna Lewis-Dougherty to newer icons like Dee Valladares.

The stakes are higher than ever because the fans actually voted on the game’s mechanics, including tribe colors and even the types of advantages hidden in the jungle.

The grand finale for “Survivor 50” is officially scheduled for Wednesday, May 20. Episodes will air each Wednesday until the finale, which is expected to be a three-hour event.
