The primary election is coming up in Ohio

By Chi Steadman

The primary election will be held on May 5 to determine who represents the Democratic and Republican party in state offices. Primaries lead to the general election on November 3.

Primaries in Ohio let people vote for the candidates they want to represent state offices. Ohio holds an open primary, meaning someone of any political affiliation can vote any party in the primaries.

For the main candidates there is Vivek Ramaswamy, running for governor, and Robert McColley, running as lieutenant governor, who are running for the Republican party. Amy Acton running for governor and David Pepper running as lieutenant governor are running for the Democratic party.

There are more candidates running aside from Ramaswamy, McColley, Acton, and Pepper. A few others include Heather Hills and Stuart Morris for governor and lieutenant governor in the Republican race, Sherrod Brown for U.S senate, and Keith Faber for attorney general of Ohio on the Republican ticket.

Few students surveyed knew about the primary election. “I don’t really know their policies, so it’s hard to judge,” sophomore Sidney Doss said.

According to Ohio Capital Journalism, Ramaswamy plans to try reducing taxes. “You deserve to keep what you get,” Ramaswamy said, according to Deseret News.

“I’m definitely not a politician, but I have been a lifelong public servant,” Acton said according to Ohio Capital Journalism. “I’m running for governor because people in Ohio are struggling, and we continue to go backwards on nearly every measure.”
