Nineteen seniors will be showcasing their artwork inside the atrium cubbies on April 18 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Students will be able to feature their artwork throughout previous art classes and personal projects.
Senior Natalie Recher has been taking art at the high school since her freshman year and has participated in Career Art, Art 1, 2, 3 and is currently in Art 4.
“I’ve gotten to learn how to design tattoos and special effect makeup on mannequins in Career Art,” Recher said. “Those were definitely really fun.”
“I’m excited to bring back this piece I created in Art 3,” Recher said. “It consists of a bunch of different mediums with newspaper cutouts, pen ink, and paint. It was really special because it was my cat.”
After students in Art 4 have finished their art projects, students present their work to the class by critiquing and drinking hot chocolate.
“We usually only get to see our classmates’ work,” Recher said. “But seeing how other students interpreted the art project prompts they were given and just whatever they came up with will be cool.”
Every year, the current high school art teachers, Amanda Newsome and Shannon Parsons, work alongside the middle school art teacher, Allison Geis, to organize the district art show. They include other grades of art work, as well.
“Around the second quarter we start saving some of the students’ artwork and continue throughout the year,” Newsome said. “Then we go into making labels for them, tracking art using spreadsheets, sending invitation emails out to the parents, preparing food, and budgeting the whole event.”
Newsome has been a part of the planning process for seven years and this will be the third year for Parsons.
“It’s really neat to see the students come in and look at their art work,” Newsome said. “I can tell that they’re really proud of it and themselves. Also, their parents get to see what they’re doing in class and how good their art looks.”
