Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi comedy with some dark humor released to theaters on March 20, based on Andy Weir’s book of the same name. The movie stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace and Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt. The movie has a PG-13 rating.
According to critics on Rotten Tomatoes the movie was a great experience and a good adaptation of Weir’s book, keeping the sense of humor and sacrifice. Some reviews even praised the directors for staying source accurate.
Project Hail Mary allows the audience to follow Grace in his story of waking up in space with amnesia and learning he is on a mission to save Earth. During his adventure, he learns a lot about himself and Earth’s neighbors.
There are fans who have watched the movie before they read the book, which gives them the possibility to read Weir’s book and learn more about Project Hail Mary. “I’m curious about how many details were left out of the movie that were in the book,” sophomore Madison Frank said.
For Bellbrook High School’s book club on April 17, librarian Amanda Brenner picked Project Hail Mary for readers to talk about especially with the release of a movie based on Weir’s book.
“Even though the book is marketed for adults, it has a ton of young adult crossover appeal,” Brenner said. “I definitely chose the book for that reason, because I knew the movie was gonna be very hyped.”
The movie shows many twisting points that are included in the book, many of them show Grace’s struggles in space when saving planet Earth.
“I think a lot of people would enjoy the plot itself,” Frank said. “It’s not like a cheesy movie in the sense it’s predictable. And the plot twists, definitely twisted, did not see them coming.”
