Live From New York, SNL Season 40 Begins!

by Bridget Richard

The 40th season of Saturday Night Life kicked off last Saturday, September 27, with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande.

One new change to the show is the Weekend Update hosts. The segment was hosted by Cecily Strong and Colin Jost after Seth Meyers left the show last February. Now, Michael Che is taking Strong’s place, while Cecily remains a cast member. It is the first time in the show’s history where two men have hosted the Weekend Update segment together.

Another major change is in the opening sequence at the beginning of the show.  The famous booming voice that has called out the opening sequence for 39 years passed away on August at the age of 96. Taking the role now is Darrell Hammond, who had filled in for Pardo before.

The first episode introduced two new characters to the cast as featured players, Michael Che and Pete Davidson, who is the first member to be born in the 1990’s. Next week’s episode will be hosted by Sarah Silverman on NBC at 11:30 p.m.
