On Saturday, May 2, American Pharoah won the 141st Kentucky Derby with a time of 2:03.02. Firing Line came in second with Dortmund in third. American Pharoah clenched the victory by half a length over Firing Line. According to Bleacher Report, this was the jockey Victor Espinoza’s second consecutive Kentucky Derby win and third in his career.
Many expected Firing Line and Dortmund to be American Pharoah’s strongest competition, which proved to be the case as the three of them battled it down to the last seconds. According to CBS News, American Pharoah’s owner, Ahmed Zayat, said while watching a replay of the race, “Pharoah is a freak of nature and for the first time I am seeing him right now working, working hard. I knew if he had the lead, nobody would catch him.” American Pharoah’s next race could be in two weeks at the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, but it has yet to be announced if he will race.
