“La La Land” Sees A Twist Ending

by Kayla Stephensen

“La La Land” had a sad turn when it was announced for Best Picture at the Academy Awards but it was actually the movie “Moonlight” that won the night’s most coveted award. The cast and directors of La La Land received the award and even started their acceptance speeches but were cut off and notified that they were not in fact the winners of the cherished award. As Henry Wong, a Bellbrook Senior, put it, “You mean the one where ‘La La Land’ won and then they didn’t?” emphasizing the shock of the event. Later, it was explained that this was not one of host Jimmy Kimmel’s many pranks (although he did have plenty of those), but rather a misreading. Renowned actor, Warren Beatty, one of the announcers, was confused as to why the “Best Picture” card had Emma Stone’s name on it and after the false announcement, realized it was actually the card for “Best Actress.”

In the end, “La La Land”was nominated for 14 total awards tying with the record set by two other famous films: “Titanic” and “All About Eve.” By the end of the evening, the movie won 6 of the awards nominated for: Best Actress, Best Director, Best Song, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.
