New York Attack Worries Public Officials

By: Meghan Malas

Tuesday October 31 left New York devastated after a driver directed the path of his pickup truck towards a crowded bike path. The New York Times provided greater detail of the tragic incident in an article by Barbara Marcolini and Sarah Stein Kerr, “The rampage ended when the motorist — whom the police identified as Sayfullo Saipov, 29 — smashed into a school bus, jumped out of his truck and ran up and down the highway waving a pellet gun and paintball gun and shouting.”

The attack resulted in 9 people dead and another 11 injured. According to CNN, Mayor Bill De Blasio did identify the violent act as a terrorist attack, and as recently as November 1, he announced that more police and security will be present on New York public transportation systems. Saipov was shot and killed by a law enforcement officer immediately in the post-attack chaos. Information in still limited on the events surrounding the attack and the attacker himself, but it is clear that New York will be changing its policies to prevent future terrorism in the city.
