On January 11, the recently-revived Bellbrook High School Academic Team attended their first meet at Franklin High School, where they battled the teams of both Franklin and Valley View. Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams have been practicing twice a week since October, trying to get an edge on the competition, but at the meet both teams were able to beat Franklin, but came in second to Valley View.
In the Varsity competition, Bellbrook started off strong against Franklin, securing an early lead in the standard rounds and ascertaining that lead later in the alphabet and lightning rounds. However, the struggle with Valley View proved to be a back-and-forth ordeal, with Valley View pulling away in the lightning round.
Said Mrs. Pam Schultz, who is one of the coaches, “[Franklin] was a good place for us to start and get our butterflies out. Valley View was very close to winning League last year, so to score so closely to them is a good way to start the season.” The team, at least at Franklin, vastly outnumbered the competition, a stat that may prove crucial, as it allows Bellbrook to make more substitutions and use fresher minds.
