Competitive Cornhole Brings Big Prize Money

By: Morgan Sharbaugh

August 6-11, the American Cornhole League held a championship competition at Valley Forge Casino in Pennsylvania. Several international teams competed, with the winner taking home $4,000 in prize money. The top 8 teams won a divided $10,000.

The competition started in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, back in January 2019 to finally finish in August. Teams were weeded out until finally the Hissner Henderson, Sullivan Cowan, Modlin Lane, King Sciessere, Cortley Kitchin, Morton Powers, Dotson Short, and Price Geary teams took the lead. The Hissner-Henderson team claimed first place and $4,000. Sullivan-Cowan team came in second. Modlin-Lane and King-Sciessere tied for third, Corley-Kitchin and Morton-Powers for fifth, and Dotson-Short and Price-Geary tied for seventh.

Here at Bellbrook High School, we have added cornhole sets to the courtyard. Every day during lunch you can see students out enjoying the sun and some friendly competition. Two sophomore boys report that, “Cornhole is a fun and competitive sport,” and that they were aware it was a national sport. One reports, “I know that cornhole has national competitions but I’ve never seen them,” despite the fact competitive cornhole can be viewed on ESPN.
