Johnny Football: Texas Hero or Texas Embarrassment?

by Nick Martin

One of the biggest names in college football is Johnny Manziel, more commonly known as “Johnny Football.” He is known on the field for his abilities as a quarterback, but off the field he is more known for his partying and drinking. Over the summer, he was seen at a University of Texas frat party and was asked to leave over the fact he was drinking light beer and wearing a pink shirt. Manziel, 20, was voted into the most elite club in college football: the Heisman trophy winners. Since it was his freshman year, it made Manziel the youngest person to ever win the award. He also won the Davey O’Brien award, an award given to the best quarterback in the NCAA two days before on December 8, 2012.

Another scandal came into light that he may have signed autographs for money, which is against NCAA rules. Many think he is the best quarterback ever and more think he is just a lost kid in a big world. Texas A&M is led by Manziel. Preseason they were ranked in a coaches’ poll as the number 6 college football team in America. Peter King, a staff writer for Sports Illustrated, reported, “But Manziel, to many teams right now, would be undraftable because they’re scared of his mood swings and off-field questions. But it only takes one team out of 32 to fall for him. And some team will, unless he self-destructs between today and draft day.”

Whether you love him or you hate him, whether you think he’ll be a hall of fame football player or college burn out that crashes and never recovers, all have to admit that he is one of the most talented athletes to ever play.
