The Mockingjay Lives and Thomas Runs

by Rachel Stewart

Two exciting things regarding film happened this week. Fans finally got their first full-length trailer for Mockingjay Part One, the second-to-last movie in The Hunger Games franchise, and a Friday premier of The Maze Runner, a movie about a boy who wakes up in a mysterious maze with no memories.

This past Monday, September 15, the first full length trailer of Mockingjay-Part One was finally released, with the title “The Mockingjay Lives.” The trailer has been eagerly anticipated by fans, as there have been two teaser trailers, but this is the first full-length video to be put out.  As of today, only its third day since release, the trailer already has 8 million views.  This will be the second to last installment in the insanely popular Hunger Games franchise, and is scheduled for release on November 21. The film’s predecessor, Catching Fire, released late last year, was a huge success, raking in 864.4 million dollars at the box office, making it the 37th highest grossing film worldwide.  This series of movies is based on a young adult trilogy entitled The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which has over 65 million copies in print in the U.S alone.

Also this past Friday, The Maze Runner premiered.  This is the first in a series about a teenage boy named Thomas, who one day wakes up somewhere called The Glade, smack dab in the center of a mysterious maze, without any adults and without any of his memories, other than his name.  The story follows him as he tries to unravel the mystery of the maze, and as he becomes what their group calls a “maze runner.” The film stars Teen Wolf actor Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, with co-stars like Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Will Poulter. This is also an adaptation of a popular young-adult book series by James Dashner.

Lately, there has been an explosion of young-adult book to movie adaptations. There have been ones that have been quite successful, such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars, Twilight, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. There have also been ones that have not been so lucky, such as Beautiful Creatures, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and Vampire Academy.  It is fairly certain that Mockingjay will be a hit, but the fate of The Maze Runner is yet to be determined.
