On January 29, the largest baby in the state of Florida was delivered. The baby, named Avery Ford, weighed 14.1 pounds at birth and was born at St Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in Tampa. The average baby weight is 7.5 lbs. Only 5% of babies fall outside of the range of 5.5 lbs. to 10 lbs. This baby had a truly exceptional birth weight. Still, this Florida baby is not the heaviest baby ever. The heaviest was 22 pounds and 8 ounces, born 60 years ago.
The Florida baby was born to Maxxandra Ford who endured an 18-hour labor. Ford had a long and painful delivery due to the size of the baby and other factors. Ford noted that during the delivery she was “cussing up a storm,” according to CNN.
In addition to her problematic labor, Maxxandra Ford didn’t even know she was pregnant until the third trimester. Ford didn’t experience the usual pregnancy symptoms like vomiting, nausea and most surprisingly, weight gain.
The baby has been in a neonatal intensive care unit since birth but is doing well and should be clear to go home soon. High birth weight babies can have trouble breathing and maintaining normal blood sugar levels. These things are being monitored. However, when the baby does return home, the baby’s father has already planned a future as a linebacker for little Avery.
