A powerful earthquake shook Nepal in late April, leaving thousands dead and many more wounded. It had a rating of 7.8. Aftershocks caused further destruction and forced Nepalese people to sleep on the streets enduring below-freezing temperatures. The death toll has reached over 7000.
Eight hikers on Mount Everest were also killed in the first quake due to resulting avalanches. The United States is prepared to send aid when Nepal welcomes it. One of the most immediate needs is shelter, and many charities are already raising money to provide the aid needed in Nepal.
