A tragedy in Oregon

By Kate Barton

On October 1, a white male student of Umpqua Community College in Oregon opened fire and killed nine students. He then took his own life, after exchanging fire with two police officers who soon arrived to the scene.

The shooter reportedly had problems with mental illness, and has posted on social media about feeling that “other people think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m the sane one,” and complaining about not having a girlfriend.
A survivor of the shooting told police that the shooter handed an envelope containing a flash drive to student to give to the police.

The parents of the shooter said their hearts go out to the affected families. President Obama is planning a trip to Oregon to meet privately with each of the families who lost a child in the shooting.
