Bellbrook Student Rasis Funds To Help Uyghurs With State-Backed Suppression

By: Bradley Jager

Kaden Silva, a junior at Bellbrook High School, is hosting a fundraiser for the week of March 7 – 11. All proceeds are going to the World Uyghur Congress, an international organization founded by ethnic Uyghurs that support and raise awareness for Uyghur people being repressed and kept at “reeducation camps” Xinjing by the Communist Party of China.

The fundraiser is a raffle with three winning prizes:

1st – $50 Amazon gift card
2nd – $25 Chick-Fil-A gift card
3rd – $15 Starbucks Gift Card
Ticket prices are 1:$1, 6:$5, and 10:$8.

When asked why he started the raffle, Silva replied, “Reading about this is one of the few things that made me physically angry. Whenever I talked to people (about Uyghur repression), they had no idea who I was talking about. I wanted to help fix this depressing situation.”

How can you help protect Uyghurs and human rights?

According to Silva, the best thing you can do is to:
1) Research the issue.
2) Draw your own conclusions.
3) Spread awareness get as many people helping as you can.
4) Donate to causes like the World Uyghur Congress.
