Tips for being ready for your graduation ceremony

By: Cate Eberly

Graduation marks the achievement of four years of student’s hard work and dedication. Preparing for this major milestone ensures the day runs smoothly to properly honor the graduate.

Beyond the required cap and gown attire, what you wear underneath still matters. Choosing something comfortable and neat will not cause you to be uncomfortable through all the sitting and standing during the ceremony. Regardless if you are girl or guy, picking lightweight fabrics and avoiding anything clothing too bulky for underneath your gown can additionally help you remain comfortable out on the turf of the stadium.

Shoes are equally as important as you want something that you will feel comfortable and confident enough to walk across the stage in. The athletic department requests that people do not wear spiked heels on the turf. The administration asks for shoes neater than beat-up sneakers.

Making sure your gown is wrinkle-free before the ceremony is also essential.  Properly hanging or steaming the gown will ensure it is wrinkle free for graduation day. You can throw it in the dryer with a damp towel for a quick steam.

A special touch some seniors chose to do is decorate their cap with their future destination. Senior Allison Gebic plans to decorate her cap with the logo of her future school. “I think it adds a special touch to your grad outfit,” Gerbic said. “It is also something you get to keep that is personalized to remember the day.”

In terms of additional items, you may not have a secure place to store belongings, so only bring essentials such as a phone and car keys. Applying sunscreen is also a must to avoid a sunburn.

Arrive early to find your place and avoid last-minute stress. Double-check any instructions from your school, such as where to line up or how your name will be called. “I know graduation is going to be a very emotional day,” senior Lucy Knisley said. “I just plan to have myself ready so I don’t have to worry about anything else.”

Graduation is a key event for all graduates — be present in the moment. Being prepared allows you to focus on what really matters: celebrating and forward to what’s next!
