A Legend Retires

by Dan Yokajty

Derek Jeter, long time shortstop for the New York Yankees, is retiring from his extensive baseball career this year. Jeter has played 20 seasons in the MLB for the New York Yankees and is leaving behind a legacy and a very big void. Jeter said in a statement that “this is the right time.” He also said, “I want to have a family.” Jeter has accomplished many things, including 5 World Series Championships and American League All-Star for 14 years.

Ever since Jeter announced that he was retiring, people have been paying their respect for him by using the hashtag #RE2PECT. The #RE2PECT movement was spawned by a Jordan commercial that showed everyone in the world (even Red Sox and Mets fans) tipping their hats to the baseball legend. Jeter is very humble about the entire world showing their respect for his baseball skills. He never shows much emotion when the whole crowd gives him a standing ovation.
