By Maria Gerbic

As the winter sports season comes to a close, Bellbrook Wrestling is preparing to send four athletes to Columbus March 12-15 for the OHSSA state tournament. The athletes who placed at districts are Cameron Kelly, Ben Schram, Tyler Wiederholt, and Max Neiling. The four competed at districts March 7 and placed in each individual weight class.

Seniors Ben Schram and Cameron Kelly, 2012 state champion and 2013 runner-up, are heading to state once more as they wrap up their final season with the team. At districts, Kelly won his 132 weight class by decision, as did senior Ben Schram in his 170 lb weight class. Junior Tyler Wiederholt achieved 3rd place in his 152 weight class and freshman Max Neiling earned 4th place in his 113 weight class. Bellbrook’s wrestling team as a whole won 3rd place at the district tournament. Schram, Wiederholt, and Kelly are all returners to the state tournament, at the 2014 tournament Kelly was runner-up, Schram made it to the third place finals round, and Wiederholt advanced to the 5th place finals round.

Bellbrook’s team also performed well in SWBL. Bellbrook placed 2nd at league (158 pts), defeated by Eaton (202 pts). Max Neiling, Ben Sherril, Ben Schram, and Cameron Kelly all won 1st place in their weight classes at the SWBL meet.

At the 2015 Winter Sports Awards, coach Bobby Kosins said that Bellbrook may never have a team quite as strong as this one. This is due to the hard work, discipline, and excellent performance the team shows. Max Neiling earned an Eagle Heart Award, Cameron Kelly was titled Most Valuable, and Benjamin Schram received the Coach’s Award at the awards banquet. Make sure to support Bellbrook’s wrestling team for their 3 day state meet in Columbus as they work hard to come out on top!
